The urban sprawl

The Dheisheh Refugee Camp is a deprived environment where the buildings are basic, the streets are narrow and there is a lack of green space. As a result, there is nowhere for children to play, or green space to be enjoyed.

My proposal is to regenerate the rooftops with the addition of roof gardens and roof top parks. These will provide important green spaces, transforming the skyline and improving the quality of life for residents, especially children by providing a safe, fun place to play. The roofs will significantly reduce the need for air conditioning in summer and can provide a degree of insulation in winter.

Brightly coloured cooling towers will be built, providing a cheap way to passively cool the houses whilst injecting colour into the skyline. They will comprise of a lightweight aluminium frame wrapped in coloured fabric.

My proposal creates important opportunities for residents to improve their own environments. This might involve painting the existing water containers a bright colour or growing vegetables. The result will be a new skyline full of green and colour; something to be proud of.

Layering urban activity is a

Layering urban activity is a great idea. How can the roofs be used commonly as gren play grounds & atthe same time provide privacy for the residents on the ground floor. Green roofs will also provide greater insulation for the rooms below. Theremay b esturcutral issues to sustain the additional weight of earth & people occupying the roofs.

Not all roof’s will be ideal

Not all roof’s will be ideal for communal spaces sites would have to be carefully chosen to provide the correct levels of privacy.

The structural issues wont be to much of a problem, from my understanding as many of the buildings are designed to add another layer of habitation, also there are different types and weights of green roof.
